Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Road infrastructure plays a crucial role in the efficiency of agricultural trade by connecting rural farmers to urban markets and facilitating the transportation of agricultural goods. In Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Bida Local Government Area in Niger State, road networks are often inadequate, leading to high transportation costs, delays, and spoilage of perishable agricultural goods (Aliyu & Musa, 2023). Bida, an agricultural hub known for its production of crops such as yam, maize, and millet, faces significant challenges due to poor road infrastructure, which impacts the flow of agricultural products to local and regional markets (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
The importance of road infrastructure for agricultural trade cannot be overstated, as it directly affects the cost-effectiveness of transportation, market access, and the overall competitiveness of agricultural products in the market. When roads are poorly maintained or non-existent, it leads to inefficiencies that increase transaction costs and limit the profitability of farmers. Conversely, well-developed road infrastructure reduces transportation costs, enhances market access, and improves the overall trade environment for agricultural products (Usman & Abdullahi, 2024).
This study will examine the impact of road infrastructure on agricultural trade in Bida Local Government Area, assessing how the quality of road networks affects the movement of agricultural products, trade volumes, and market accessibility. It will also explore the socio-economic benefits of improving road infrastructure on agricultural trade and the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the crucial role of road infrastructure in facilitating agricultural trade, Bida Local Government Area continues to face challenges related to inadequate and poorly maintained road networks. This has led to high transportation costs, reduced market access, and, in some cases, the wastage of agricultural products due to delayed transportation. As a result, farmers in Bida struggle to sell their produce at competitive prices, affecting their income and overall economic development. This study seeks to assess the effect of road infrastructure on agricultural trade in Bida, focusing on how improvements in road quality can enhance trade efficiency and boost agricultural productivity.

Limitations may include challenges in accessing detailed data on agricultural trade volumes, road conditions, and transportation logistics.
